Schwalbe Lugano at RRP £17.99 Each – Reviewed by James at Partridge Cycles
At first glance:
Schwalbe have always been prominent in the market with some top products such as the ‘Marathon Plus’ for commuters, the ‘ONE’ and the ‘Ultremo ZX’ for road cyclist and many MTB tires such as the ‘Rapid Rob’, ‘Nobby Nick’ and ‘Magic Marys’. Now with this impressive portfolio of tyres can they really make a £17.99RRP tire great? For the interests of all you reading, I am currently running these in a 700x25mm.
Ease of use:
This is a section I wish I could skip because it’s a wire bead therefore a notorious thumb breaker! And I wont hide from the fact that these didn’t disappoint. Hopefully the more ridged shape will provide longer lasting mileage over the winter months.
On the field:
I can’t pick when I will be lucky enough to be given something to test but with the current climate giving me torrential rain, followed by cold dry Baltic weather, quickly turning into frost bitten and icy roads, I couldn’t have asked for a better time to do this review.
Although they don’t roll quite as well as their higher priced counterparts, these tyres have held all their own in all environments from cycle paths to lanes, never giving me any feeling of unease. No punctures have occurred despite hedge cuttings and the aftermath of car headlight glass from icy shunts. I can only put this down to Schwalbe’s ‘K-Guard’ system (rated 3 of 6 on this particular tire) and still there are no obvious signs of cuts or slices.
I can’t argue for £17.99! it’s a safe choice for the winter commute or even a solid sportive tyre, I don’t think this model will be entering the TDF anytime soon but in this case we must see this tyre for how economic and reliable it is.
